What is the CCRN certification and what does CCRN mean?
CCRN (critical care registered nurse) is a certification offered by the AACN for nurses working in critical care settings. The exam and certification prepares allows nurses to demonstrate excellence and competence in the critical care arena and recognized world-wide. It is widely considered to be the gold standard for critical care (ICU) nurses.
How do I prepare to pass the CCRN Exam?
Many nurses utilize test preparation services, such as those offered by Nursing CE Central. Why should I use a CCRN review course?
Most nurses do not possess the knowledge to pass the CCRN based on ICU experience alone. The CCRN covers a multitude of topics (see above), and a review course will ensure you are well-rounded and are presented with the knowledge needed to pass the CCRN with confidence.
How can I take the CCRN exam?
The CCRN exam is offered online as well as at various in-person testing locations across the country. To apply for your certification and schedule your exam, visit the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses’ online portal to begin.
What is on the exam/what do I need to study for?
The CCRN exam is a 3-hour test that contains 150 questions. 80% of the exam is focused on Clinical Judgement, while the remaining 20% covers Professional Caring and Ethical Practice.
Of the Clinical Judgment portion, 17% of questions are focused on Cardiovascular knowledge, 15% on Respiratory knowledge, 20% on combined Endocrine/ Hematology/ Gastrointestinal/ Renal /Integumentary knowledge, 14% on combined Musculoskeletal/Neurological/Psychosocial knowledge, and 14% on Multisystem knowledge.
Of the Professional Caring and Ethical Practice portion, elements of Advocacy/Moral Agency, Caring Practices, Response to Diversity, Facilitation of Learning, Collaboration, Systems Thinking, and Clinical Inquiry knowledge are all tested.
How much does it cost to take the exam?
It costs $245 for members of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses to take the CCRN exam, and $360 for nonmembers to test. Retests and CCRN renewal exams costs members $170, and nonmembers $275.
When will I receive my results after I take the test?
If you take the CCRN exam online, you will receive your results and a score report immediately after you finish the test. If you take the exam via paper and pencil at a testing site, you will receive your results in the mail about 6 to 8 weeks after the test.
How long is my CCRN certification effective for after I pass the exam?
CCRN certifications typically expire three years after being issued, and can be renewed through continuing education options during that three-year certification period.
Can I retake the CCRN exam if I don’t pass it on my first try?
Yes! You can take the CCRN exam up to four times in a 12-month period.
