2020 Illinois RN License Renewal CE FAQs

Requirements for Illinois RN License Renewal:

LPNs and RNs are required to complete 20 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.

  • 1 of the 20 contact hours must be on Sexual Harrasment

APRNs are required to complete 80 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.

  • 1 of the 80 contact hours must be on Sexual Harrasment
  • 20 of the 80 contact hours must be on pharmacotherapeutics
    • 10 of the 20 pharmacotherapeutic contact hours must be on Opioid Prescribing or Substance Abuse
  • 3 of the 80 contact hours must be on Safe Opioid Prescribing Practices if wishing to renew Controlled Substances Registration

What are the NEW Illinois nursing License renewal requirements in 2020?

The new Illinois nursing license renewal CE requirements for 2020 is the addition of a mandatory a Sexual Harassment Prevention Course. It must be 1 contact hour in length and be provided by an approved Illinois CE provider.

My employer provides a sexual harassment prevention training. Does this satisfy the requirements? 

Maybe. In order for your employer’s CE course to satisfy the requirement it must:

1.) Be an approved Nursing CE provider

2.) Include all mandatory components of the course, as prescribed by the IDFPR (what is sexual harassment, how to respond to sexual harassment, reporting sexual harassment, and Whistleblower protections.)

3.) Provide a certificate for the course, which meets IDFPR standards.

If you are unsure, it is wise to contact your hospital educator to verify that the course meets the Nursing CE renewal requirements set forth in Section 1130.400  Sexual Harassment Prevention Training.

If you are unable to verify, we suggest taking a sexual harassment prevention course through an approved provider whose course is accepted by the Illinois Board of Nursing.

How do I know if a sexual harassment prevention course is accepted for my Illinois nursing license renewal? 

The IDFPR has certain requirements for the course, which are listed below.

Requirements for approval:

  • Provided by an approved or pre-approved sponsor of nursing CE.
  • Includes information on:
  1. What is sexual harassment, including it’s forms and types.
  2. What should one do if one experiences or witnesses unwelcome sexual contact.
  3. Reporting sexual harassment within one’s place of employment and to outside entities, such as the Illinois Department of Human Rights.
  4. Whistleblower protections.
