2024 Ohio Nursing License Renewal Requirements

As nurses in the United States deal with staffing shortages and burnout, there isn’t much time to look through the license renewal rules and continuing education requirements.

For Ohio nurses who need to renew in 2024, a lapse in licensure not only means having to get in touch with the board, but also the inability to continue working.

That’s why the Nursing CE Central(NCC) team has created a full list of top questions, CE requirements, last day to renew, and consequences of missing the renewal deadline for the 2024 Ohio nursing license renewal period.

LPNS have until September 15, 2024, to renew their license with the state of Ohio without incurring additional renewal costs.

1. What are the 2024 CE Requirements for Renewal?

LPNS must complete 24 contact hours of CE. One hour must cover the Ohio Nurse Practice Act, category A.

2. Which Nurses are Required to Obtain CE to Renew Their Licenses?

LPNs are required to complete CE for the 2024 Ohio license renewal period. However, newly licensed LPNs don’t need to complete continuing education units for their first renewal

3. Do I Need to Take a Test to Complete the CE Requirements?

Yes, you need to complete a test for the Ohio Nurse Practice Act course to fulfill your CE requirements.

4. Is Nursing CE Central an Ohio Board of Nursing-Approved Provider?

Yes, the Ohio Board of Nursing accepts CE from Nursing CE Central for purposes of license renewal.

5. How Can an LPN Check if a Nurse Practice Act Course is Ohio BON-Approved?

If a provider plans to offer the NPA course, the CE activity must be approved by an OBN provider or offered by a provider that is headquartered in Ohio and has been approved by an OBN Approver.

Nursing CE Central’s NPA course is approved and directly accredited by the Ohio Nurses Association.

5. Do I Need to Submit My CE Through CE Broker?

No, you do not need to do that to renew your license.  You’re not required to submit documentation at the time of renewal. However, you must complete all CE by the deadline of October 31, 2024. The board does require that you maintain a copy of all CE documentation for a minimum of six years, in case of an audit.

6. Do I Need to Save Documentation Showing That I Completed My Continuing Education Renewal Requirements?

The board requires that you maintain a copy of all CE documentation for a minimum of six years, in which they may conduct a CE audit at any time. You’re required to send this documentation to the board within 60 days of any audit notice that’s sent to you.

(Insider Tip: NCC keeps lifetime, digital copies of all completed nursing continuing education to help RNs and LPNs quickly and thoroughly retrieve them during an audit.)

7. When Is the License Renewal Deadline?

The early LPN license renewal deadline is September 15, 2024. Nurses can also renew by October 31, 2024, but will need to pay a $50 late processing fee.

The board recommends early renewal, on or before September 15, 2024, to avoid additional costs and the potential of a lapsed license.

8. How Do I Renew My License?

You’ll need to complete your CE, fill out the online renewal application at http://elicense.ohio.gov., and attest to CE completion. A valid method of payment will be needed.

9. What Happens if I Don’t Renew On Time?

If you miss the October 31, 2024 deadline, your license will become inactive, and you will not be allowed to work in Ohio until you submit a license reinstatement application.

In most cases, you’ll only need 24 contact hours of CE, one of which must meet the Ohio Nurse Practice Act requirements, along with a valid form of payment, to reinstate your license through the Ohio eLicense portal (https://elicense.ohio.gov).

10. Can I Work With an Inactive License?

No, you can’t practice nursing with an inactive license.

11. How Do I Check That My Renewal Application Is Complete?

To check your renewal status, go to https://elicense.ohio.gov/oh_verifylicense and look at the listed date of expiration. If the year listed is ‘2024,’ your renewal application isn’t complete, or you have not yet placed your license on ‘inactive’ status.
