As nurses across the country battle against staffing shortages, burnout, and an all-time high of demands and strains on the overall healthcare system, little time is left for sifting through new rules and CE requirements for license renewal!

For Michigan nurses whose licenses expire during 2024 , a lapse in licensure not only means a potentially big headache dealing with the Michigan Board of Nursing, but also additional fees and continuing education requirements.

That’s why our Nursing CE Central team has a full breakdown of top questions, deadlines, state requirements, and consequences of missing your Michigan nursing license renewal deadline for the 2024 renewal period.

If you miss your license renewal deadline, you have 60 days to renew it without having to go through the relicensure process.

1. What are the 2024 CE requirements for renewal?

Michigan nurses must complete 25 contact hours of continuing education, two of which must be on Pain and Pain Symptom Management, and two of which must cover Implicit Bias training, in order to renew their nursing license. (Nursing CE Central does include the Implicit Bias training webinar in our bundle.) Additionally, the Michigan Board of Nursing requires that no more than 12 continuing education units be completed during any given 24-hour period. This means most of them will need a minimum of three days to compliantly complete their nursing ce course requirements for renewal.

(Nursing CE Central’s 2024 Michigan Renewal Bundle includes all required courses.)

2. Is Nursing CE Central a Michigan Board of Nursing-approved provider?

Yes! The continuing education courses from Nursing CE Central are approved and accepted by the Michigan Board of Nursing.

3. How can I renew my license this year?

Michigan nurses can renew their license online by logging into the MiPLUS renewal portal at http://www.michigan.gov/MiPLUS.

4. What happens if a nurse doesn’t renew their license before its current expiration date?

Michigan nurses have a 60-day grace period if they miss their renewal deadline, in which they can renew their license without having to go through the relicensure process. The 60-day grace period comes with an additional $20 late fee.

If a nurse does not renew during their regular renewal period, or during the 60-day grace period, then a relicensure is required. Unlike the regular renewal process, the relicensure process requires that a nurse submit proof of completed continuing education requirements and pay an additional $70 to $100 in renewal fees.

5. How can I renew my license during this grace period?

You can still renew your license online during the 60-day grace period, by logging into the MiPLUS renewal portal at

BON sends out reminders 90 days prior to expiration.

Cost for RN or LPN renewal is $128.50, or $158.30 for RN with Specialty. Late fee $20 if renewed within 60 day grace period. Relicensure is $228.80, valid for two years. Payment with credit or debit card required- Visa, Mastercard, Discover. American Express is not accepted.

6. Can I still work/practice if I miss my renewal deadline?

No. You cannot practice until your license is active. If you practice with a lapsed/expired license you may be subject to penalty fees.

7. What do nurses need to have ready when starting their renewal online with the Michigan BON?

Most nurses will only need fulfilled continuing education requirements, along with a valid method of payment, to complete their renewal through the online, Michigan licensing platform. Payment with a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover credit or debit card is required. American Express is not accepted.

8. Can I renew now, and complete my CEUs later?

No. The Michigan BON requires that all nursing continuing education requirements be met at the time of renewal. You must attest to having fulfilled all continuing education requirements before the final submission of your online renewal form.

9. How can I check that my renewal application is complete?

Verification that your Michigan RN license renewal is complete will be available through the MiPLUS portal in about 24 hours after submitting your renewal application. You can find this verification under the ‘Home’ tab of the MiPLUS portal by selecting the ‘My Records’ subtab and confirming that a new expiration date is listed next to licensing information.

10. How long must nurses keep documentation proving that they completed their 2024 CE requirements for renewal?

The Michigan Board of Nursing does not require nurses to submit proof of completion of continuing education (CE) during the regular renewal process. Nurses are required to maintain their own records of CE completion for a minimum of four years.

The Board conducts random audits after each renewal period, where randomly selected nurses will be notified that they must submit evidence of having earned their required, renewal CEs. This evidence regularly comes in the form of CE certificate copies.
