Nursing is a skilled profession and requires the maintenance of an active license. To do that, nurses must keep track of the renewal deadline and CE requirements. That kind of research can be time-consuming and isn’t the best use of a busy RN’s day.

To simplify this process, Nursing CE Central(NCC)  created this article that contains the 2024 Illinois nursing license renewal requirements. It provides the last day to renew, state requirements, contact hour information, consequences of missing the deadline, and answers to other licensure questions.

Illinois RNs must renew their nursing licenses by May 31, 2024.

1. What Are the 2024 CE Requirements for Renewal?

RNs must complete 20 contact hours of continuing education. One contact hour must be on sexual harassment, one contact hour must be an evidence-based implicit bias in healthcare training, and one contact hour must be on diagnosis, treatment, and care of Alzheimer’s disease, along with other dementia types (for RNs that care for patients aged 26 or older). Nurses who work with children must complete mandated reporter training every six years.

No, you don’t need to report continuing education to CE Broker, but you’ll need to attest that you completed CE to the board when renewing your license.

6. Does Documentation That Proves CE Completion Need to be Kept?

Yes, most people who renew their licenses on or before the deadline won’t need to submit proof of their completed nursing CE courses; those who miss the deadline must submit copies of their completed CE during the license reinstatement process.

Nurses are responsible for keeping individual records of continuing education unit completion in the event of a request for them from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Keeping all completed CE certificates for at least six years is suggested.  Nursing CE Central records all completed certificates, which can be easily accessed by logging into the website.

7. When Is the 2024 Renewal Deadline?

The renewal deadline is May 31, 2024 and the renewal open date is April 1, 2024.

8. How Do I Renew My License?

You must fulfill the required continuing education courses, attest their completion to the board, and complete the license renewal application online on the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation’s Portal. A valid payment method will be needed.

9. What Happens If I Miss the License Renewal Deadline?

If you miss the renewal deadline, then your license is considered expired, and you need to get it reinstated to continue working in Illinois. You must pay additional renewal fees and submit proof of CE completion to complete the license reinstatement process.

10. Can I Work with an Expired License?

No, you cannot practice nursing with an expired license in Illinois.

11. How Do I Verify the Status of My License?

You can verify the status of your license by visiting the online services portal of the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. It can take two to four business days for the updated status of a license to be reflected in that portal.
