As nurses across the country battle against staffing shortages, burnout, and an all-time high of demands and strains on the overall healthcare system, little time is left for sifting through new rules and requirements for license renewal!

For North Carolina nurses whose licenses expire during a chaotic 2024, a lapse in licensure not only means a potentially big headache dealing with the North Carolina Board of Nursing, but also the inability to continue working.

That’s why our Nursing CE Central team has a full breakdown of top questions, deadlines, requirements, and consequences of missing your renewal deadline for the 2024 North Carolina nursing license renewal period.

Nurses with an expired status will not be allowed to practice until their license is reinstated.

1. How can I renew my license? Can I mail in a paper renewal application?

According to the North Carolina Board of Nursing, paper applications are not accepted. Nurses must renew their license online by accessing the North Carolina Nurse Gateway portal (https://portal.ncbon.com/).

The only instance in which you should mail license or nursing continuing education unit information to the North Carolina Board of Nursing is if you are audited by the Board.

2. Am I required to complete a test or quiz for my North Carolina CE Requirements?

No. We’ve made it as easy as possible to complete your North Carolina requirements. You can easily complete your nursing CEUs with no test.

3. What happens if I don’t renew my license before its current expiration date?

The North Carolina Board of Nursing places all nurses with expired licenses on an expired status. Nurses with an expired status will not be allowed to practice until their license is reinstated.

4. What do I need to have ready when starting my renewal online with the North Carolina Board of Nursing?

Most nurses will only need fulfilled continuing education requirements, along with a valid method of payment, to complete their renewal through the online, North Carolina Nurse Gateway portal. Payment with a Visa or Mastercard, credit or debit card is required.

5. What are the 2024 continuing education requirements for renewal?

Nurses must meet North Carolina’s Continuing Education Competency requirements in order to renew their license. While there are several different options of meeting this requirement, most nurses choose to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education from an approved provider (such as Nursing CE Central).

6. Can I renew now, and complete my continuing education (CE) requirements later?

No. All North Carolina nurses must complete their CE course requirements before they renew their license. The North Carolina Board of Nursing must verify that you have met all the conditions for renewal before your license is renewed.

7. How can I check that my renewal application is complete?

North Carolina nurses can access their renewal application and status through the Nurse Gateway portal (https://portal.ncbon.com/).

8. Do I have to keep documentation proving I completed my 2024 continuing education (CE) requirements for renewal?

Yes. All North Carolina nurses must save proof of continuing education course completion. If audited, nurses must provide certificates or other documentation proving that they fulfilled their CE requirements for the given renewal period.
