2024 Pennsylvania Nursing License Renewal Requirements

A nurse needs to be a master of balancing responsibilities. One task that you can’t forget is renewing your license. Since the 2024 Pennsylvania nursing license renewal period is upon us, we created this article to make it easy to renew your license.

It details all of the most important renewal information you need to know, such as your renewal deadline, continuing education requirements, and what you must do if you miss the renewal deadline.

Pennsylvania RNs will be split into two groups and will either need to renew their license by April 30, 2024, or October 30, 2024.  LPNs will need to renew their license by June 30, 2024.

1. What Are the 2024 Continuing Education Requirements for a Pennsylvania License Renewal?

RNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education from a board-approved and ANCC-accredited provider (such as Nursing CE Central). Two of the 30 contact hours must be on child abuse recognition and reporting.

LPNs will only need to complete the 2-contact hour child abuse recognition and reporting course. This is provided by the Pennsylvania Child Welfare Resource Center and can be found here.

Nursing CE Central’s 2024 Pennsylvania Renewal Bundle provides 28 contact hours and guides you to a free child abuse recognition and reporting course. This bundle is ANCC-accredited and accepted by the Pennsylvania Board of Nursing.

2. Do I Need to Take a Test for My Pennsylvania CE Requirements?

Yes, you must take a test to complete the child abuse recognition and reporting course.

3. Do I Need to Submit My CE Through CE Broker?

No, you don’t need to submit your completed continuing education through CE Broker. You do need to keep a record of your completed CE certificates as proof of completion in case the Pennsylvania Board of Nursing audits you. However, the provider of the child abuse recognition and reporting course must submit proof of completion to the BPOA.

4. Is Nursing CE Central a Pennsylvania Board of Nursing-Approved Provider?

Yes, Nursing CE Central’s continuing education courses are accepted by the Pennsylvania of Nursing for license renewal.

5. Do I Need to Save Documentation Showing That I Completed My Continuing Education Renewal Requirements?

It is the responsibility of a nurse to keep continuing education records for a minimum of 6 years in the event the Pennsylvania Board of Nursing requests them or selects the nurse for an audit.  Nursing Ce Central keeps a record of all your completed certificates and they can be easily accessed by logging into your account.

6. When Do I Need to Renew My License?

For the 2024 Pennsylvania nursing license renewal period, nurses will receive a notice of renewal in the mail before the expiration date of their license.

Pennsylvania RNs will be split into two groups and will either need to renew their license by April 30, 2024, or October 31, 2024.

Pennsylvania LPNs will need to renew their license by June 30, 2024.

It’s still your responsibility to renew your license if you don’t receive your renewal notice in the mail.

7. What Happens If I Don’t Renew My License On-Time?

Your license will expire, and you cannot practice nursing until you reactivate it. This needs to be done online on the Pennsylvania Licensing System and you’ll need to submit documentation that you completed your continuing education requirements for renewal.  Once you’re logged in, you can access the reactivation application by clicking the pencil icon next to your license number.

8. Can I Practice Nursing with an Expired License?

No, you cannot practice nursing in Pennsylvania until you have received an active license.
