2024 Virginia Nursing License Renewal
As nurses across the country battle against staffing shortages, burnout, and an all-time high of demands and strains on the overall healthcare system, little time is left for sifting through new rules and requirements for license renewal!
For Virginia nurses whose licenses expire during a chaotic 2024, a lapse in licensure not only means a potentially big headache dealing with the Virginia Board of Nursing, but also the inability to continue working.
That’s why our Nursing CE Central team has a full breakdown of top questions, deadlines, requirements, and consequences of missing your renewal deadline for the 2024 Virginia nursing license renewal period.
The Virginia Board of Nursing says they will automatically add a $40 late for LPNs, and a $50 late fee for RNs who renew after midnight on the day of their current license’s expiration date.
1. What are the continuing education requirements for the 2024 Virginia nursing license renewal period?
Most nurses must meet Virginia’s Continuing Education Competency requirements in order to renew their license. While there are several different options of meeting this requirement, most nurses choose to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education from an approved provider (such as Nursing CE Central), or 15 hours of continuing education if they have 640 hours of active practice as a nurse.
Nurses who are renewing their license for the first time following their initial licensure are exempt from the Continuing Education Competency requirements.
2. Is Nursing CE Central a Virginia Board of Nursing-approved provider?
Yes! Courses from Nursing CE Central are approved and accepted by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
3. Am I required to complete a test or quiz for my Virginia CE Requirements?
No. We’ve made it as easy as possible to complete your Virginia continuing education unit requirements. You can easily complete your nursing CEUs with no test.
4. How can I renew my license?
You can renew your license online by visiting the Virginia Department of Health Professions’ online portal (https://www.license.dhp.virginia.gov/license/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2Flicense%2F) and using the Personal Identification Number (PIN) provided in their license renewal notice.
5. What happens if I don’t renew my license before its current expiration date?
The Virginia Board of Nursing says they will automatically add a $40 late for LPNs, and a $50 late fee for RNs who renew after midnight on the day of their current license’s expiration date.
6. How can nurses check that their renewal application is complete?
Virginia nurses will see a confirmation page of completion at the end of their online renewal process. The Virginia Board of Nursing encourages licensees to print this page and save it for their records. They explain that “most licenses are renewed within a half hour of completing the renewal payment.”
Nurses can check on the status of their license by using the License Lookup tool (https://dhp.virginiainteractive.org/Lookup/Index).
7. Do I have to keep documentation proving I completed my 2024 continuing education (CE) requirements for renewal?
Yes. The board requires that all licensees keep proof of nursing continuing education completion for each renewal period, for a minimum of two years following renewal. This documentation is needed in case a nurse is selected for an audit by the Virginia Board of Nursing and must be provided to them within 30 days of a request. *Nursing CE Central stores lifetime copies of all CEU certificates of completion for active members.
