California RN License Renewal Requirements

California RN License Renewal Requirements

Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurses

• LVN/LPNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.
• First Renewal: If this is your first renewal following the issuance of your license, you are not required to complete thirty (30) hours of CE.

Registered Nurses

• RNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.
• *NEW* As of January 2023 – Newly Licensed RNs are exempt from the 30 contact hour requirement with the exception of the 1 contact hour implicit bias training that is to be completed within their first two years of licensure per Bill AB1407 Chapter 445

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

• APRNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.
• APRNs with prescriptive authority are required to complete 3 contact hours on Schedule II controlled substances, and the risks of addiction
• Certified Nurse Midwives are required to complete 2 contact hours on Schedule II controlled substances and neonatal abstinence syndrome
• *New* As of January 2023 – Newly Licensed APRNs are exempt from the 30 contact hour requirement with the exception of the 1 contact hour implicit bias training that is to be completed within their first two years of licensure per Bill AB1407 Chapter 445

All courses must be taken through a continuing education provider recognized by the California Board of Nursing. Nursing CE Central is a preferred California Nursing CEU provider.
