Alabama Requirements

Licensed Practical Nurses

  • LPNs are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.
    • 4 of the 24 contact hours must be on The Nurse Practice Act. (one-time requirement)

Registered Nurses

  • RNs are required to complete 24 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

  • APRNs are required to complete 24 contact hours of general Continuing Education every 2 years.
    • APRNs in Collaborative Practice must complete 3.5 contact hours provided by ABN on collaborative practice, approval process and protocols in the state of Alabama.

    • APRNs renewing a Qualified Alabama Controlled Substances Certificate (QACSC) must complete 4 AMA PRA Category 1 board-approved contact hours on prescribing controlled substances every 2 years.

      California Requirements

      Licensed Vocational Nurses

      • LVNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

      Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

      • APRNs are required to complete 50 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.
        • 5 of the 50 contact hours must be on pharmacotherapeutics
        • 1 of the 50 contact hours must be on each of the following topics:
          • 1 hour on diseases, including but not limited to: acquired immune deficiency syndrome and human immunodeficiency virus
          • 1 hour on risk management
          • 1 hour on sexual assault
          • 1 hour on domestic violence
          • 1 hour on cultural competency
          • 1 hour on substance abuse, including but not limited to: prescribing controlled substances and pain management
        • 2 of the 50 contact hours must be on the topic of mental health conditions common to veterans and family members of veterans.
          • This requirement must be completed no less than once every 6 years (3 renewals).
          • This includes determining whether a patient is a veteran or family
            member of a veteran, screening for post-traumatic stress disorder, risk
            of suicide, depression and grief, and suicide prevention training.
        • 2 of the 50 contact hours must be on diagnosing and treating cognitive or mental health conditions, including, but not limited to, Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, delirium, related cognitive impairments and geriatric depression. (required once every 6 years).

        • APRNs may use their board certification to satisfy the 14 contact hours needed for RN license renewal as long as
          • certification was initially attained during the licensure period, OR
          • certification has been in effect during the entire licensure period, OR
          • certification has been renewed during the licensure period.
      • APRNs applying for initial authority to prescribe medical cannabis will need 6 contact hours in the subject for approval (one-time requirement)
        • APRNs renewing medical cannabis prescribing authority will need 3 contact hours.
        • Requirements for continuing education in medical cannabis go into effect January 1st 2025
        • APRNs are required to complete 5 contact hours of continuing education on pharmacology every year.
            • APRNs with prescriptive authority are required to complete 5 contact hours of continuing education on pharmacology every year.
              • 1.5 of the 5 contact hours must be in the dual subject of pharmacology and addiction disorders AND 2.5 contact hours on addiction disorders for APRNs with CAPA-CS who have a waiver and registration issued by the  DEA.
              • 1.5 of the 5 contact hours must be in the dual subject of pharmacology and addiction disorders for APRNs with CAPA-CS who do not have a waiver and registration issued by the DEA.

       

      Special Conditions

      • If you graduated in Kentucky after 1998 the domestic violence course was
        included in your curriculum. Your one-time requirement has been met.
      • If you graduated in Kentucky after 2011 the pediatric abusive head trauma
        course was included in your curriculum. Your one-time requirement has

        or(c) Completion of 30 continuing education units (CEUs) within the 2 years immediately preceding the date of the renewal application.

       

      Registered Nurses

      • RNs can satisfy renewal requirements by demonstrating either of the items below:
      • (a) 1,000 hours of active nursing practice within the 5 years immediately preceding the date of the renewal application;(b) Satisfactory completion of all requirements for a diploma or degree from a Board-approved nursing education program withinthe 5 years immediately preceding the date of the renewal application;

        Licensed Practical Nurses

          • APRNs with prescriptive authority shall obtain 8 hours of continuing

        Washington Requirements

        • RNs are required to complete 8 contact hours of continuing education as well as 96 hours of active practice annually.
        • 2 of the contact hours must be on health equity
        • 6 additional contact hours must be on suicide prevention training (one-time requirement)
        • RNs that provide telehealth services must complete telehealth training (one-time requirement).

         

        Advanced Practice Registered Nurses

        • APRNs must maintain an active RN license
        • APRNs are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.
        • APRNs with prescriptive authority are required to complete an additional 15 contact hours
          of continuing education on pharmacology every 2 years.
        • APRNs
          that are pain management specialists must complete 18 contact hours in
          pain management every 2 years. These hours count towards the 30 total.

        • 6 additional contact hours must be on suicide prevention training (one-time requirement)

        Licensed Practical Nurses

        • LPNs are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.
          • 2 of the 24 contact hours must be on mental health conditions common to veterans and their families

          • 2 of the 24 contact hours must be on end-of-life care (one-time requirement)

        • APRN licensed in the State prior to January 1, 1999 must complete the following:
        • 60 hours of continuing education related to the APRN’s recognized role and population focus area; and 400 hours of active nursing practice as an
