Course Overview

This course explores Avian Influenza (H5N1 strain), its impact on animal and human health, and its potential for mutation and transmission. Learners will examine the virology, epidemiology, and clinical presentation of H5N1, historical outbreaks, and current global surveillance efforts. In addition, the course covers treatment options, antiviral therapies, and preventive measures, including biosecurity protocols and vaccination strategies. Through a case study, learners will understand the challenges of managing H5N1, the risks of zoonotic transmission, and the role of public health policies in mitigating future outbreaks.

Course Outcomes

After completing this course, the learner will rate a 4 out of 5 on the Likert Scale for their ability to:

  1. Learners will understand the epidemiology and transmission of H5N1 influenza, including zoonotic spillover, human infection risks, and seasonal patterns. 
  2. Learners will understand and assess the clinical presentation and progression of H5N1 infections, including complications such as ARDS, multiorgan failure, and neurological symptoms. 
  3. Learners will identify and evaluate surveillance, prevention, and response strategies, including antiviral treatments, biosecurity measures, and international public health policies.
