Course Overview

This course is an overview of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) methods biphasic positive airway pressure (BiPAP) and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). This course will provide an overview of BiPAP and CPAP basics, administration, contraindications, considerations for specific patient populations, precautions, patient education, and management. Learners will explore the purpose of these therapies and ways to assess BiPAP and CPAP use and success in patient care. This course is for LPNs, RNs, and APRNs.

Course Outcomes

  1. Describe common side effects, including severe possible side effects, of BiPAP and CPAP 
  2. Describe educational strategies for BiPAP and CPAP use 
  3. List alternatives to BiPAP and CPAP use 
  4. Explain management techniques for BiPAP and CPAP complications 
  5. Discuss recommendations for BiPAP use and monitoring in outpatient, non-clinical settings
