Course Overview
Author: Pamela Halvorson RN, BS, MBA
The following course describes how canine-assisted therapies are becoming increasingly popular in hospital, clinical, and residential healthcare settings. The patients in these settings represent a vulnerable population as they face not only the challenges of their medical conditions and treatments but also separation from familiar settings and social supports. Therapy dogs serve as both a comforting, nonjudgmental presence as well as a positive tactile and sensory distraction.
