Continuous BiPAP in Respiratory Failure

Contact Hours: 1

Author(s):

Molina Allen, MSN, RN, CCRN

Course Overview

Continuous bilevel-positive airway pressure (BiPAP) is a safe and non-invasive form of supplemental oxygen and respiratory support for patients with hypoxic, hypercapnic, or mixed respiratory failure. Utilizing this ventilation method when a nasal cannula does not normalize blood gases can prevent the need for intubation and mechanical intubation. This may improve outcomes by lowering the risk for ventilator-associated pneumonia and lung restricting that occurs with long-term mechanical ventilatory support.

  2. Discuss mechanisms and benefits of non-invasive continuous ventilation for treating respiratory failure.
  3. Summarize clinical presentation of patients and assessments to evaluate baseline and response to treatment.
  4. Identify precautions, potential complications, and nursing interventions to optimize patient outcomes.
