Course Overview

Herpes zoster is a DNA virus that belongs to the herpesvirus group that occurs when the varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivates after an episode of varicella (chicken pox). VZV originated over a million years ago in Africa, with herpes zoster occurring in one of three people and complications occurring in 10% of clients.

The initial signs and symptoms of herpes zoster are prodromal and include headache, fever, malaise, and photophobia. A few days later, a rash that causes itching, tingling, and excruciating, burning pain follows. Herpes zoster is a reportable adverse event after COVID-19 vaccination, and the virus can potentially be life-threatening, necessitating the nurse’s thorough understanding of the virus.
