Course Overview
By completing this course, the nurse will understand the definitions, indications for use, proper placement of external fetal monitoring devices, and appropriate procedures depending on fetal age. Legal obligations of adequate application, notification to the attending doctor, obstetrician, or nurse midwife, along with documentation and record-keeping, will be presented for the entire duration of Fetal Monitoring of the pregnant patient. Case study presentations will also help nurses care for patients who may fit the needs and /or requirements of Fetal Monitoring, including continuous versus intermittent monitoring.

Course Outcomes
After completing this course, the learner will rate a 4 out of 5 on the Likert Scale for their ability to:
- Clarify the time frames necessary for continuous versus intermittent fetal monitoring
- List the supplies needed for external fetal monitoring (EFM) with proper belt placement
- Identify and measure the waveforms on the EFM strip – concentrating on fetal heart rate (FHR)
- List nursing actions that can be used to mitigate potential problems, such as fetal distress
- Distinguish normal from abnormal values & patterns
- Discuss the legalities of documentation & storage of the monitor strips
