Kidney Transplant: Procedure and Aftercare

Contact Hours: 3

Author(s):

Michael York MSN, RN

Course Overview

End-stage kidney disease affects thousands of Americans. It is a disease that limits patients physically, emotionally, and socially. Many will start dialysis, which is a very time-consuming treatment that leaves the patient exhausted. A kidney transplant offers patients a chance to reclaim their lives. They can come off or not need to start dialysis.

The kidney transplant process is complex and can be long. Some patients may wait six to eight years to obtain their transplant once placed on the kidney transplant waitlist. Thousands of people are on the kidney transplant waitlist and only about a quarter of these patients will receive a transplant each year. There is a great shortage of available donors and the public needs to be informed about the benefits of organ donation.
