Course Overview
Author: R.E. Hengsterman MSN, RN
This comprehensive course delves into the critical evaluation and management of traumatic pelvic injuries, which often result from high-energy incidents such as motor vehicle collisions and significant falls. Recognizing the pelvis’s complex anatomy and the life-threatening nature of its injuries, the course emphasizes the importance of an interprofessional team approach to address complications like hemorrhage and multi-organ dysfunction.
Participants will explore the classification systems, including the Tile, Young-Burgess, and WSES classifications, to assess fracture types and patient stability, guiding effective treatment strategies from nonoperative methods to advanced surgical interventions such as angioembolization, preperitoneal packing, and Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA).

- Understand pelvic anatomy, including the sacrum, coccyx, innominate bones, and major vascular structures.
- Identify key blood vessels susceptible to injury during pelvic trauma and understand their clinical significance in hemorrhage control.
- Apply the Tile, Young-Burgess, World Society of Emergency Surgery (WSES), and AAST Vaginal Injury Classification in the classification systems to categorize pelvic fractures and vaginal injuries based on anatomical patterns and hemodynamic stability.
- Recognize the skills required to execute ATLS protocols, including the ABCDE approach for rapid assessment and stabilization of trauma patients.
- Foster effective collaboration within an interprofessional team to manage complex pelvic fractures and associated injuries, ensuring comprehensive patient care.
