Medical Aid in Dying: What is the Nurse’s Role?

Author: Marybeth Anderson Keppler
BSN, RN, OCN

This is certainly a subject on which many people have differing values and views. However, there are jurisdictions in the United States in which physician-assisted or medical aid in dying is legal, and it is important for nurses in those states to have at least some basic knowledge.

This course is not intended to persuade anyone, but rather to provide objective information on what these terms mean, and the responsibility of the nurse to provide compassionate care to patients that make this decision per the ANA’s Position Statement.

It is outside of the nurse’s scope of practice to administer any medical aid in dying, and it is unethical for the nurse to suggest this to a patient.
