Course Overview
Author: Elaine Enright, RN, BS
This course has been created for nurses to help them understand how to identify moisture-associated skin damage (MASD), the etiology and epidemiology of this problem, and its current treatments.
The course also reviews the skin’s affected layers so nurses will know what area(s) are involved in MASD, how this affects the skin, and how healing begins. Skin exposed to fluids for a long time can turn a whitish color, a process called maceration. This can lead to breakdown and infection in the epidermis layer of the skin. Nurses will be trained in the mechanisms of MASD and what medical conditions may cause it. We will also examine research being conducted to find the most effective treatments.
