Course Overview

Mpox (previously called “monkeypox”) is an infectious disease caused by the mpox virus, which is in the same family as the variola virus and is similar to the smallpox virus. A global outbreak of one of the clades of the virus began in 2022 and continues today, making it a disease that is important for nurses to understand. Small mammals and humans are susceptible to the virus, which is easily spread via respiratory droplets, fomites, and close contact (including sexual contact) with an infected individual. The defining clinical features are skin lesions and lymphadenopathy and can also include flu-like symptoms. Treatment involves symptom management and preventing the spread of the virus via vaccinations.
