Course Overview

Osteoporosis Management

Author: R.E. Hengsterman MSN, RN

This course offers an exploration of osteoporosis, a prevalent condition affecting 10 million individuals in the U.S. Osteoporosis is characterized by reduced bone density, weakened bone structure, and an elevated risk of fractures.

Participants will examine osteoporosis from foundational pathophysiology to advanced treatment options. Key topics include bone mineral density (BMD) assessment using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), clinical risk evaluation, and the multifaceted impacts of osteoporotic fractures, including disability, healthcare costs, and mortality risk. The course covers non-pharmacological management strategies such as calcium and vitamin D optimization, weight-bearing exercises, and fall prevention, alongside pharmacological options, including bisphosphonates, denosumab, parathyroid hormone analogs, and emerging agents like cathepsin K inhibitors.
