Course Overview

Portable Mechanical Ventilator Use

Author: Mary Harris, MSN, RN

In the past, respiratory ventilators were limited to the Intensive Care Unit and the Operating Room. This is no longer true. Portable Mechanical Ventilators are utilized more frequently across many healthcare settings. This course will outline the fundamental concepts necessary to care for patients who require mechanical ventilation and may use portable mechanical ventilators, either temporarily or long-term. We will define portable mechanical ventilators, describe why they may be used, and explain the machine’s essential functions. We will discuss common causes of alarms, how to troubleshoot them, and identify basic safety considerations when using portable mechanical ventilators.
