Course Overview

Recognition and Treatment of Narcotic Overdose

Author: Devon Capristo
MSN, FNP-C

For decades, the United States has been wrestling with an opioid overdose epidemic. This public health challenge has been influenced by various factors over time, yet unfortunately, the situation shows no signs of improvement in the foreseeable future.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), from 1999-2021 nearly 280,000 Americans died from prescription opioid overdoses, 152,000 died from heroin overdoses, and in 2021 alone around 71,000 Americans died from synthetic opioid overdoses (6). Many patients who overdose arrive in emergency departments across the United States every day. This course will outline the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose and inform nurses of treatment options for patients who have overdosed.
