Author(s):

Elaine Enright, RN BSN

Course Overview

Since obesity has become a significant epidemic in the country and the world, many clients are opting for bariatric surgery to lose weight. One of the side effects of losing a large amount of weight is sagging skin and fat deposits elsewhere in the body that are out of proportion. So, what happens to the sagging skin after this surgery?   Nurses should understand why this happens and be able to meet the client’s needs after the excess skin is removed.

In this program, we will explore the history of skin removal surgery, who is eligible for it, the different areas of excess skin reduction, the types of surgery, and the criteria the client must meet.

We will also examine the complications of this surgery, nursing considerations, recovery, client and family education, and ongoing research.
