Here are the Illinois Nurse License Renewal Requirements:

 

Licensed Vocational/Practical Nurses
  • LVN/LPNs are required to complete 20 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.
    • 1 of the 20 contact hours must be on sexual harassment
    • 1 of the 20 contact hours must be an evidence-based implicit bias in healthcare training
    • 1 of the 20 contact hours must be in diagnosis, treatment and care of Alzheimer’s disease, along with other dementia types (for RNs that care for patients aged 26 or older).
    • Nurses working with children must complete mandated reporter training every 6 years.

    Registered Nurses
    • RNs are required to complete 20 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.
      • 1 of the 20 contact hours must be on sexual harassment
      • 1 of the 20 contact hours must be an evidence-based implicit bias in healthcare training
      • 1 of the 20 contact hours must be in diagnosis, treatment and care of Alzheimer’s disease, along with other dementia types (for RNs that care for patients aged 26 or older).
      • Nurses working with children must complete mandated reporter training every 6 years.
    Advanced Practice Registered Nurses
    • APRNs are required to complete 80 contact hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.
      • 1 of the 80 contact hours must be on sexual harassment
      • 1 of the 20 contact hours must be an evidence-based implicit bias in healthcare training
      • 20 of the 80 contact hours must be on pharmacotherapeutics
      • 10 of the 20 pharmacotherapeutic contact hours must be on opioid prescribing or substance abuse
      • 3 of the 80 contact hours must be on safe opioid prescribing practices if wishing to renew controlled substances registration
      • 1 of the 80 contact hours must be in diagnosis, treatment and care of Alzheimer’s disease, along with other dementia types (for APRNs that care for patients aged 26 or older).
      • APRNs working with children must complete mandated reporter training every 6 years.
