What are the CE requirements for nurses in Illinois?
LPNs and RNs are required to complete 20 contact hours of CE every 2 years.
- 1 of the 20 contact hours must be on sexual harassment
- 1 of the 20 contact hours must be an evidence-based implicit bias in healthcare training
- 1 of the 20 contact hours must be in diagnosis, treatment and care of Alzheimer’s disease, along with other dementia types (for RNs that care for patients aged 26 or older).

Are tests required?
No. The Illinois Board of Nursing does not require that tests be taken in order to issue certificates. We do not feel that tests are an efficient use of nurses’ time. Therefore, we do not require tests. You simply need to read the material and certify you have learned the material with one click.
Does Illinois accept CE from Nursing CE central?
Yes, the Illinois Board of Nursing accepts CE from Nursing CE Central for purposes of license renewal.
When is the last day to renew my license with the state of Illinois?
The last day to renew an RN license is May 31, 2024, and the renewal open date is April 1, 2024.
What happens to my license if if I miss the renewal deadline?
Your license is considered expired if you did not renew on time. In the state of Illinois you cannot practice with an expired license.
Can I practice nursing with an expired license?
No, you cannot practice nursing in Illinois with an expired license.
How do I complete a course?
Once you enroll you will have access to all courses. To complete a course you read and learn the course materials, then testify that you have done so by clicking a button. Once this is complete your certificate will be issued.
How do I access my certificates once a course is completed?
Your certificate will be instantly emailed to you once you complete a course. Additionally, it is available online for you to access at any time. We keep a record of your certificates for five years.
Are the courses timed?
No. Users may complete the courses at their own pace. Nursing CE Central does not monitor your time spent in courses.
