Course Overview

BSN, RN, CCRN, CMC
Heart failure (HF) is one of the most common chronic health problems in the United States. With how common HF is, it is important for all nurses to have a fundamental understanding of this disease process. One specific phase of care that presents a risk to HF patients is surgery. Surgical procedures pose a risk of cardiovascular complications to all patients, and the risk is significantly higher in patients with a diagnosis of HF. Therefore, it is vitally important for nurses working in the operative area to have an understanding of HF and its inherent risks for surgical procedures. Nurses should know what signs to look for in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative environment. Of course, it will also be important for these nurses to know how to handle these complications should they arise.
