According to the CDC, the number of both in- and outpatient surgeries performed in the US during 2010 was almost 50 million; and as healthcare technology continues to advance, this total will rise concurrently.

The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) states that this field within the nursing profession “is the single largest specialty in the United States and beyond,” and based on the number of yearly procedures performed each year, this is not a shocking statement!

They are an asset to surgical teams, and it is essential that we ensure their work does not go unnoticed.

From the simplest outpatient procedure to the most complex and time-intensive, a med-surg nurse’s role is vital, and that is why we must take the time to recognize their hard work and dedication during Med-Surg Nurses’ Week!

The Power of Saying ‘Thank You’

Although all of the above are great gift suggestions, sometimes simply saying ‘thank you,’ or “I appreciate you and the work that you do. You are making an impact,” can be so touching to a med-surg nurse.

Of course, Med-Surg Nurses Week is not the only time you can do this, and it shouldn’t be!

Showing gratitude is free and can happen anytime and anywhere.

And to all of our med-surg nurses out there, thank you for the dedication, time, and energy that you put into your career. We truly don’t know what we would do without you.
