North Carolina Nursing License Renewal CE Requirements
The North Carolina Board of Nursing requires that LPNs and RNs
to complete one of the following methods to renew their license every 2 years:
30 contact hours of continuing education
15 contact hours of continuing education AND one of the following
640 hours of practice within the last 2 years (prior to renewal)
Completion of a nursing project
Authoring or co-authoring a nursing-related article, paper, book, or book chapter
Developing and conducting a nursing CE project that is at least 5 hours
Certification or recertification by a national certifying body recognized by the NCBON

APRNs are required to complete one of the two requirements below to renew their license every 2 years:
50 contact hours of continuing education
1 of the 50 contact hours must be on controlled substance prescribing
practices, including signs of abuse or misuse of controlled substances
and controlled substance prescribing for chronic pain management.
A minimum of 20 hours of the required 50 hours must be in the advanced practice nursing population focus of the NP role
APRNs that possess a national certification are deemed to be compliant with the CE requirement
APRNs with prescriptive authority
1 contact hour on controlled substance prescribing
practices, including signs of abuse or misuse of controlled substances
and controlled substance prescribing for chronic pain management.
