While bedside nursing is often seen as the traditional path for nurses, it’s important to acknowledge that it can also be a source of tremendous stress and burnout. The demanding nature of bedside care, coupled with long hours and intense emotional involvement, can take a toll on nurses’ well-being and job satisfaction.  

However, it’s crucial to remember that bedside nursing is not the only route within the nursing profession. In fact, nursing offers a world of possibilities beyond the hospital walls that can provide a much-needed reprieve from the pressures of the bedside.

My Experience in Non-Traditional Nursing Career Paths 

Allow me to share with you my personal journey as an RN reviewer for pre-authorizations and how it led me to discover the world of non-traditional nursing. I used to work nights at a local hospital through an agency, eager to make a difference in patients’ lives.  

However, it didn’t take long for me to realize the safety concerns and challenges that came with the bedside route.  

One unforgettable night, I was assigned a staggering nine patients on a Progressive Care Unit floor. As any nurse knows, this patient assignment was not only unsafe but also unacceptable.  

Concerned for patient safety and the integrity of my nursing license, I made the difficult decision to refuse the assignment. Sadly, my decision didn’t sit well with the charge nurse and supervisor, and I found myself placed on the DNS (do not send) list, making it nearly impossible to pick up shifts.  

To make matters worse, the agency I worked for didn’t advocate for me; they simply reiterated the hospital’s rules and policies. This experience was just one among many unsafe patient horror stories that plague our profession.  

It became evident that I needed to break away from the bedside route and find an alternative path. It was during this time of uncertainty that a childhood friend, who happened to be a nurse, introduced me to the concept of remote nursing jobs.  

Intrigued by the possibility of a stress-free work environment and better work-life-school balance as I pursued my MSN, I took the leap and applied for a remote nursing position. Despite having no prior experience in this field, I was fortunate enough to secure the job.  

I can confidently say that joining the world of remote nursing was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The absence of the chaotic and high-stress environment of the bedside has allowed me to thrive both professionally and personally.  

I have regained control over my career, my well-being, and my pursuit of education. My experience is a testament to the fact that nurses don’t have to settle for the bedside if it compromises their safety and sanity.  

Non-traditional nursing jobs, such as remote nursing roles, provide a viable alternative that can offer a fulfilling and balanced career path. As I continue my journey as an RN reviewer for pre-authorizations, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to patient care in a different way.  

This remote nursing role not only allows me to advocate for patient safety but also provides the flexibility and peace of mind that I desperately needed. It is crucial for nurses to realize that they don’t have to settle for a career that compromises their well-being and professional growth.
