2024 Louisiana Nursing License Renewal Requirements

1. What are the CE Requirements for License Renewal?

Louisiana RNs must meet continuing education competency requirements to renew their license. 2. How Many CE Are Required for Louisiana Nurses?

The Louisiana State Board of Nursing requires RNs to complete 30 contact hours of CE.

3. Which Nurses Must Obtain CE to Renew Their License?

Louisiana RNs must meet competency requirements to renew their license. While there are several options available to fulfill this requirement, most nurses choose to complete 30 contact hours of CE from an ANCC and Board approved provider (such as Nursing CE Central).

No,  you don’t need to complete a test to fulfill the CE requirements for renewal.

  6. Do I Need to Submit My CE Through CE Broker?

No, you don’t need to report your CE through CE Broker and are not required to submit CE certificates at the time of renewal. However, you must complete all CE by the license renewal grace period ending on January 31, 2025. The board requires that you maintain a copy of all completed CE certificates for a minimum of five years in case of an audit.

7. When Is the License Renewal Deadline?

Louisiana RNs have until December 31, 2024, to renew without incurring a $50 late fee. However, they have a grace period that ends on January 31, 2025, and must renew by that date with the state of Louisiana before a license reinstatement is required.

8. What Happens if a Nurse Doesn’t Renew Their License by the End of the Grace Period?

The board will change your license status to expired. Those with an expired status won’t be allowed to practice until their license is reinstated.

9. How Can I Get My License Reinstated if I Didn’t Renew It Within the Grace Period?

If you didn’t renew your license by the end of of the grace period, it’s now expired, and you are not allowed to practice in the state of Louisiana until you submit a license reinstatement application. Licensure applications must be completed online through Louisiana’s Nurse Portal at: https://lsbn.boardsofnursing.org/lsbn. You will be required to submit proof of completed CE and pay additional fees when applying for reinstatement.

10. Can I Work With an Expired License?

No, you can’t work in Louisiana with an expired license.

11. How Do I Renew My License?

You must complete the CE requirements and fill out the online renewal application at https://lsbn.boardsofnursing.org. A valid payment method will be needed.

12. How Do I Check That My Renewal Application Is Complete?

You should receive a message in the Inbox of the message center of your online Nurse Portal Account after you have successfully submitted the application. The LSBN licensure verification and the Nursys.com website will reflect updated licensure status within 24-48 hours of application submission.

13. What Is the Main Reason Louisiana RNs Have an Unsuccessful CE/Nursing Practice Audit? 

According to the Louisiana State Board of Nursing, failure to complete and maintain proof of CEs that have been accredited by the ANCC or approved by a state board of nursing is the most common reason RNs have not successfully completed the audit when they are renewing based upon the requirement for CE contact hours.

14. How Can I Save Money on State-Imposed Renewal Fees?

While the final day for renewal is January 31, 2025, if you file after December 31, 2024 you’ll incur an additional $50 late fee in addition to the standard renewal fee. You can save money by completing the CE requirements and license renewal application before December 31, 2024.
