What are the Texas Nursing License Renewal CE Requirements?

The Texas Board of Nursing requires that most nurses obtain 20 Contact hours of continuing education in the nurse’s area of practice OR achievement / maintenance of a national nursing certification the nurse’s practice area within the licensing period.

Nurses who practice with older adults or geriatrics must complete 2 contact hours of CNE relating to older adults or geriatrics prior to license renewal (course included).

All nurses must also complete a 2 contact hour nursing jurisprudence and ethics course every third two-year licensing period (course not included).

Nurses who work in an ER setting must complete a forensic evidence collection course one-time (within two years of your ER nursing position start date).

APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete 5 additional contact hours of CE in pharmacotheraputics (not included).

Any APRN who has prescriptive authority to prescribe opiates must complete 4 contact hours of CE relating to safe and effective pain management (not included).

Any APRN whose practice includes treatment of tick-borne diseases is encouraged to complete education related to the treatment of tick-borne diseases (not included).
