The state of Texas requires LVNs and RNs to complete 20 contact hours of continuing nursing education in the nurse’s area of practice within a two-year licensing period, as well as meeting the targeted continuing education requirements. The state of Texas also requires their nurses to receive their Texas Nursing CEUs by an approved credentialing provider. Nursing CE Central is ANCC accredited and, therefore, a Texas BON-recognized credentialing center.
Targeted Continuing Education for Texas
According to the statutes based on the Board Rules from the Texas Board of Nursing, all nurses must comply with the following Texas Nursing CEUs
Nursing Jurisprudence and Ethics
- According to the Board Rule, all nurses MUST complete 2 contact hours relating to this topic every licensure renewal cycle every 6 years (3 renewals).
- The Contact hours completed DO count towards the total completion of the 20 CEU requirements mandated by the state of Texas.

- APRNs may not use CMEs to fulfill these requirements only CEUSs are acceptable.
Based on your area of practice, these are the CEU requirements that nurses must review and complete:
Forensic Evidence Collection
- This course is required for any nurse who is employed in an emergency room (ER) setting, including nurses who could float to an ER, as well as nurses who are employed as a travel nurse who’s duties require working in an ER to complete at least 2 contact hours rel.211Aated to this topic. This is for any nurse who performs a forensic examination on a sexual assault survivor.
- This is a one-time requirement within 2 years of the initial dat of the nurse’s employment in the ER setting).
- Nursing CE Centrals course “Texas Nursing Forensics” meets these requirements
- These contact hours do count towards the completion of the 20 hour requirement.
Older Adult/Geriatric Care
- This course requirement is for any nurse whose practice includes older adult or geriatric populations.
- They are required to complete at least 2 contact hours of continuing education related to this topic. The contact hours completed for this requirement do count towards the completion of the 20 contact hour requirement.
- Nursing CE central has several courses that meet this requirement including Alzheimer’s nursing care, Nursing Care in Lewy Body Dementia, and Nurse advocacy: Elder Abuse.
Human Trafficking Prevention
- Any nurse who provides direct patient care must complete this requirement set forth by the Executive Director of Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
- CEU requirement hours may count towards the completion of the 20 hour requirement.
- The course must be approved by HHSC.
