As nurses across the country battle against staffing shortages, burnout, and an all-time high of demands and strains on the overall healthcare system, little time is left for sifting through new rules and requirements for license renewal!

For Minnesota nurses whose licenses expire during a chaotic 2024, a lapse in licensure not only means a potentially big headache dealing with the Minnesota Board of Nursing, but also the inability to continue working.

That’s why our Nursing CE Central team has a full breakdown of top questions, deadlines, requirements, and consequences of missing your renewal deadline for the 2024 Minnesota nursing license renewal period.

Nurses with an expired status will not be allowed to practice until their license is re-registered.

1. What are the 2024 continuing education requirements for renewal?

Nurses must meet Minnesota’s continuing education requirements in order to renew their license. They will need to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education from an approved provider (such as Nursing CE Central).

2. Is Nursing CE Central a Minnesota Board of Nursing-approved provider?

Yes! Courses from Nursing CE Central are approved and accepted by the Minnesota Board of Nursing.

3. How can I renew my license? Can I mail in a paper renewal application?

According to the Minnesota Board of Nursing, a license renewal reminder postcard is mailed approximately 3 calendar months before the registration expiration date where you will have the option to request a paper application for renewal. Otherwise, you must renew online with the MBN Online Services application.

4. What do nurses need to have ready when starting their renewal online with the Minnesota Board of Nursing?

Most nurses will only need fulfilled continuing education requirements, along with a valid method of payment, to complete their renewal through the MBN Online application. Payment with a Visa or Mastercard, credit or debit card is required.

5. What happens if I don’t renew my license before its current expiration date?

The Minnesota Board of Nursing places all nurses with expired licenses on an expired status. Nurses with an expired status will not be allowed to practice until their license is re-registered.

6. Can I renew now, and complete my continuing education (CE) requirements later?

No. All Minnesota nurses must complete their CE requirements before they renew their license.

7. How can I check that my renewal application is complete?

The Board discontinued issuing registration cards upon renewal, but you can verify your license by going to the Board’s website; click on the Verify a License button, log in and then click the Verification Services link and follow the instructions to search by license number or name.

8. Do I have to keep documentation proving I completed my 2024 continuing education (CE) requirements for renewal?

Yes. All Minnesota nurses must save proof of CE completion for two years. The Board of Nursing randomly selects licensees for an audit of continuing education records. If audited, you must submit proof of having met the continuing education requirements to the board.
