The 2024 Minnesota nursing license renewal requirements exist for good reason. Our nurses must keep up as best practices evolve, so they are empowered to provide the highest level of care for their patients.Â
However, we know you are facing burnout, staffing shortages and the high demands of a complex healthcare system. Nursing CE Central offers quick, effective courses that earn Minnesota nursing CEUs.Â
Nurses with an expired status will not be allowed to practice until their license is re-registered.
 1. What are the continuing education requirements for the Minnesota nursing license renewal period?
LPNs will need to complete 12 contact hours of continuing education and RNs will to complete 24 contact hours from an approved provider (such as Nursing CE Central).
Nursing CE Central’s Minnesota LPN Renewal Bundle includes LPN license renewal CE.
Nursing CE Central’s Minnesota RN Renewal Bundle includes RN license renewal CE.
APRNs who are certified by a national professional nursing or medical organization meet the requirements for RN renewal by holding an approved and current certification. There are no additional requirements for APRNs.
2. How can I renew my nurse license? Can I mail in a paper renewal application?
A Minnesota nursing license renewal reminder postcard is mailed approximately three months before the registration expiration date. If your email address is on file with the Minnesota Board of Nursing, you will also receive an email reminder.
If you prefer a paper application for your renewal, you will need to check the appropriate box on the back of the remidner postcard and mail it back to the BON. You can also call the BON at (612) 317-3000 to request a paper application.
Otherwise, you must renew online with the MBN Online Services application.
3. What do nurses need to have ready to start their renewal online with the Minnesota Board of Nursing?
Most nurses will only need fulfilled continuing education requirements, along with a valid method of payment, to complete their license renewal online. Payment with a Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card is required for any renewal fees.
4. What happens if I don’t renew my license before its current expiration date?
The Minnesota Board of Nursing places all nurses with expired licenses on an expired status. Nurses with an expired status will not be allowed to practice until their license is re-registered.
5. Can I renew now and complete my continuing education requirements later?
No. All Minnesota nurses must complete their CE requirements before they renew their license.
6. How can I check that my nursing licensure renewal application is complete?
The BON discontinued issuing registration cards upon renewal, but offers online license verification through its website.
8. Do I have to keep documentation proving I completed my 2024 CE requirements for renewal?
Yes. All nurses must save proof of CE completion for two years. The Board of Nursing randomly selects licensees for an audit of continuing education records. If audited, you must submit to the board proof of having met the Minnesota nursing license renewal continuing education requirements.
