The 2024 Virginia nursing license renewal requirements exist for good reason. Our nurses must keep up as best practices evolve, so they are empowered to provide the highest level of care for their patients.Â
However, we know you are facing burnout, staffing shortages and the high demands of a complex healthcare system. Nursing CE Central offers quick, effective courses that earn Virginia nursing CEUs.Â
The Virginia Board of Nursing says it will automatically add a $40 late fee for LPNs, and a $50 late fee for RNs who renew after midnight on the day of their current license’s expiration date.
1. What are the continuing education requirements for the 2024 Virginia nursing license renewal period?
Most LPNs and RNs must meet Virginia’s continued competency requirements to renew their license. While there are several options to meet the requirement, most complete 30 contact hours of continuing education from an approved provider (such as Nursing CE Central), or 15 hours of continuing education and 640 hours of active practice as a nurse.
Nursing CE Central’s Renewal Bundle includes LPN license renewal CE and RN license renewal CE.
Those who are renewing a nursing license for the first time following their initial licensure are exempt from the continued competency requirements.
APRNs licensed on or after May 8, 2002, are required to maintain current professional certification in the area of specialty practice.
APRNs licensed prior to May 8, 2002, must hold a current professional certification in their specialty or complete a minimum of 40 hours of continuing education in their specialty.
APRNs with prescriptive authority shall obtain eight hours of continuing education in pharmacology or pharmacotherapies for each two-year renewal period, in addition to the minimum nursing requirements.
2. Am I required to complete a test or quiz for the nurse license renewal CE Requirements?
No, you do not need to complete a test to fufill the CE requirements for license renewal.
3. How can I renew my license?
You can renew a nurse license online through the Virginia Department of Health Professions’ online portal. You’ll need to enter the Personal Identification Number (PIN) provided in your license renewal notice.
4. What happens if I don’t renew my license before its current expiration date?
The Virginia Board of Nursing will automatically add a $40 late for LPNs and a $50 late fee for RNs who renew after midnight on the day of their current license’s expiration date.
5. How can nurses check that their Virginia nursing license renewal online application is complete?
You’ll be directed to confirmation page after completing your online licensure renewal process. The Virginia Board of Nursing encourages licensees to print this page and save it for their records. Most licenses, according to the BON, are “renewed within a half hour of completing the renewal payment.”
LPNS, RNs, and APRNs can check the status of their license with Nursing License Lookup tool.
6. Do I have to keep documentation proving I completed my 2024 nursing continuing education requirements for licensure renewal?
Yes. The board requires that all licensees keep proof of nursing CE completion for a minimum of two years following renewal. This documentation is needed in the event of an audit and must be provided to the state BON within 30 days of a request. Nursing CE Central stores lifetime copies of all CEU certificates of completion for active members.
