Arkansas

Arkansas State Board of Nursing License Renewal Requirements

Registered Nurses are required to have 15 contact hours of continuing education every two years OR recertification by a national accrediting body OR completion of a recognized academic course. 

LPN are required to have 15 contact hours of continuing education every two years OR recertification by a national accrediting body OR completion of a recognized academic course.

California

California State Board of Nursing License Renewal Requirements

Registered Nurses are required to complete 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years, prior to license renewal.  

Advanced practice certificates: No additional requirements (beyond the 30 contact hours). 

LPN are required to have 30 contact hours of continuing education every two years, prior to licensure renewal.

Kentucky

Kentucky State Board of Nursing License Renewal Requirements

Registered Nurses and LPN are required to complete 14 contact hours of continuing education each year prior to license renewal OR 

  1. 7 contact hours of continuing education  PLUS a satisfactory nursing employment evaluation that covers at least six months of the earning period (most common for practicing nurses)
  2. A national certification or recertification in the same role as the nurse is currently practicing.
  3. Completion of a nursing research project. 
  4. Publication of a nursing or nursing-related article
  5. Participation as a preceptor to a student nurse or new employee for purposes of orientation for at least 120 hours. 
  6. Certain college courses may satisfy the CE requirement if they are beyond the prelicensure curriculum. 

Special conditions: 

  1. Domestic violence 3 contact hours must be taken within three years of obtaining Ky license. If you graduated in Ky after 1998 this was included in your curriculum *(We do not offer this course).
  2. Pediatric abusive head trauma (shaken baby syndrome) five contact hours must be taken within three years of obtaining Ky license. If you graduated in Ky after 2011 this was included. *(We do not offer this course) 

APRN must also obtain five hours of pharmacology (may be used toward other required hours). APRN may use national certification to satisfy 14 contact hours under most circumstances.

Louisiana

Louisiana State Board of Nursing License Renewal Requirements

Registered Nurses and APRNS are required to complete contact hours based on the number of hours employed: 

  1. If employed in nursing practice for more than 1,600 hours for the current year you will need 5 contact hours of CE to renew. 
  2. If employed in nursing practice for more than 160 hours but less than 1,599 you will need 10 contact hours of CE to renew. 
  3. If employed in nursing practice less than 159 hours you will need 15 contact hours of CE to renew. 

APRNs are required to have 6 contact hours of CE in advanced pharmacology applicable to their licensed population foci.

Massachusetts

Massachusetts State Board of Nursing License Renewal Requirements

Registered Nurses and LPNs are required to have 15 contact hours of continuing education every 2 years.

Minnesota

Minnesota State Board of Nursing License Renewal Requirements

Registered nurses are required to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2 year for license renewal. 

LPNs are required to complete 12 contact hours of continuing education every 2 year for license renewal.

North Carolina

North Carolina State Board of Nursing License Renewal Requirements

For license renewal one of the following conditions must be met: 

  1. 15 contact hours of continuing education AND 640 hours of practice within the last 2 years (prior to license renewal). 
  2. Certification or re-certification by a national credentialing body recognized by the NCBON. 
  3. 30 contact hours of continuing education. 
  4. Successful completion of NCBON-approved refresher course. 
  5. Completion of at least two semester hours of post-license academic education in nursing. 
  6. 15 hours of continuing education AND completion of a nursing project. 
  7. 15 hours of continuing education AND authoring or co-authoring a nursing-related article, paper, book, or book chapter. 
  8. 15 contact hours of continuing education AND developing and conducing a nursing continuing education project that is a minimum of five hours. See state website for full requirements on this statue.
